What is mesquite?
Mesquite is a hardy desert tree whose pods have been ground, roasted and brewed by indigenous communities for centuries. Roasted dark, it tastes uncannily like coffee — sweet, smoky, and naturally caffeine-free.
Why the Northern Cape?
In South Africa, mesquite is an invasive species drinking the Northern Cape dry. In 1974 it had spread across 128 000 hectares of the province; by 2007 that was 1.47 million. Its pods are how it travels — carried by livestock and floodwater to seed the next stand — so every pod we pick is one that will not become another tree. And they only get picked because people drink this.
