Let's get the obvious out of the way: this isn't coffee.
It's the pod of a mesquite tree — Prosopis — dried, roasted dark, ground, and brewed in whatever you already own. Cocoa, caramel, toasted grain, sweet from the pod itself. No bean. No caffeine. Never had any.
That's the whole answer. Everything below it is the receipts — because "tastes great, good for the planet" is printed on every packet in the aisle, and you've got no reason to believe ours yet.
It's a pod, not a bean
Mesquite is the common name for a group of thorny, deciduous legume trees in the genus Prosopis, native to the Americas. According to South Africa's Agricultural Research Council, the forms growing here are dominated by Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana (honey mesquite) and Prosopis velutina (velvet mesquite), together with their hybrids. Nobody smuggled them in, either. They were planted on purpose, from the late 1800s until as recently as the 1960s, as fodder, fuel and shade for dry country with few indigenous trees.
The tree makes long, sweet seed pods. Those pods are the raw material, and they are also the entire ingredients list. One thing, roasted and ground.
Which settles the caffeine question without you having to take our word for it. Caffeine is a purine alkaloid, and the plants that make it in any real quantity are a short list: as Kato and Nakayama set out in the "Caffeine" chapter of Biotechnology of Natural Products (Springer, 2017), it is synthesised in larger quantities in a limited number of species across the genera Camellia, Coffea, Theobroma, Paullinia, Ilex and Cola. Prosopis is in none of them. It sits in the pea and bean family, Fabaceae.
So this isn't decaf. Decaf is a coffee bean with the caffeine chemically stripped out, and it usually keeps a trace. Mesquite never had any to strip.
Why it tastes like that: sugar, meet heat
The flavour isn't a flavouring. It's sugar and heat, and that is genuinely all it is.
The fleshy middle layer of a mesquite pod — the mesocarp — is unusually sweet. In a 2018 open-access study in CyTA – Journal of Food, Díaz-Batalla and colleagues characterised pods of Prosopis laevigata and measured total free sugars in the mesocarp flour at 447.8 g/kg — roughly 45% sugar by weight, mostly sucrose, then glucose, fructose and xylose. The same paper puts the mesocarp of Prosopis pods generally in the 31–50% sugar range.
Earlier work by Peter Felker and colleagues, published in Journal of Arid Environments (2003, volume 53, issue 4), put pod flour from Prosopis alba and P. pallida at 48–59% sucrose, 26–32% total dietary fibre, 7–8% protein and 0.8–2% fat.
That sugar is the whole trick. Roast something that is nearly half sugar and carries free amino acids, and you get the Maillard reaction and caramelisation — the same two processes that turn a green coffee bean brown and a raw loaf into crust. The CyTA paper makes the link explicitly, noting that monosaccharides matter as substrates for Maillard reactions, and it measured Maillard reaction products in heat-treated mesquite flours.
So the tasting notes aren't a copywriter's wish list. They're a consequence:
- Cocoa and caramel — Maillard and caramelisation products off a high-sucrose substrate at roasting temperature.
- Toasted grain — the fibre fraction, roasted.
- A honeyed finish — pod sweetness that survives the roast. It's why most people drink it without sugar.
What it doesn't have is coffee's acidity. Coffee's brightness comes from chlorogenic and quinic acids in the bean. No bean, no bean acids. The result is rounder and lower-toned than a filter coffee, and closest in character to a dark roast or a moka pot brew.
The caveat we're not going to bury
The composition studies above were done on Prosopis laevigata, P. alba and P. pallida — South American and Mesoamerican species. The trees invading South Africa are mostly P. glandulosa and P. velutina and their hybrids. Same genus, same kind of sweet pod, but not the same species, and we have not found a published composition analysis of South African invasive Prosopis pods. So treat those percentages as the right order of magnitude for the genus, not a label claim for this bag.
We could have left that paragraph out. You'd never have known.
New idea? Not even slightly
Mesquite pods are one of the oldest foods in the Americas. The CyTA paper opens on the flat statement that species of the genus Prosopis "were a major staple food in Aridoamerica before the arrival of Europeans" — ground into flour for breads, sweets, and drinks both fermented and not. And here, farmers rated the pods highly enough to plant the trees on purpose for eighty years, mostly to get livestock through drought.
The only new part is roasting them dark and treating the result as a grind rather than a flour.
How to brew it: like coffee
That's the entire design brief, and it's the reason the ritual survives the switch. Same grinder, same pot, same four minutes standing in your kitchen doing nothing in particular.
- Espresso machine — pull it like you'd pull a double.
- Moka pot — basket level, medium heat.
- French press — four minutes, plunge.
- AeroPress — standard recipe.
- Pour-over — the gentlest extraction, and the one that shows the honey note best.
Ratio: one heaped teaspoon per 250 ml. More grounds and a longer steep make it stronger, so adjust it to your taste. It takes milk well and it doesn't need sugar.
What a cup actually costs
A 250 g bag is R199 and makes 28 cups. That's R7.11 a cup. The 10-sachet pack is R149, or R14.90 a serving, which is roughly what convenience costs you anywhere.
For comparison: in a price survey of ten South African coffee chains published by The South African, a cappuccino ran from R32.30 to R48.00 depending on the chain. Independent cafés generally sit at the top of that range or above it.
A cup at home isn't competing with that on experience. It's competing on the four mornings a week you were never going to leave the house anyway.
So — is it coffee?
No. It's the pod of a tree nobody wants growing where it's growing, roasted dark and brewed in your moka pot. One ingredient. No bean, no caffeine, and no reason to give up the ten minutes of your morning that were never really about the caffeine in the first place.
You don't need caffeine to wake up. You're already awake.
The questions we actually get asked
Is mesquite coffee actually caffeine free?
Yes, and not in the decaf sense. Mesquite (Prosopis) is a legume, and it isn't one of the plant genera that produce caffeine. There's no bean in the bag and no caffeine to remove, so it's naturally caffeine free rather than decaffeinated.
Does mesquite coffee taste like real coffee?
It tastes like a dark roast with the acidity taken out — cocoa, caramel and toasted grain, with a sweet finish. If you drink bright, fruity single-origin filter coffee, you'll clock the difference on the first sip. If you drink moka pot, espresso, or coffee with milk, it lands very close.
What is mesquite coffee made of?
Roasted, ground mesquite pods. That's the whole list. No coffee, no chicory, no grain filler, no mushrooms, no added flavouring.
How do you make mesquite coffee?
One heaped teaspoon per 250 ml, brewed in whatever you already own — espresso machine, moka pot, French press, AeroPress or pour-over. No special kit and no new routine.
Is it the same as mushroom coffee or chicory?
No. Mushroom coffees are usually coffee blended with fungal extracts, and chicory is a roasted root traditionally cut into coffee. Mesqi is a single roasted pod with no coffee in it at all.
Where does Mesqi's mesquite come from?
Pods are wild-gathered from mesquite growing in South Africa's Northern Cape, where the tree is an introduced invasive. Nothing is planted, irrigated or cultivated for it — found, not farmed. We ship from Cape Town.
Does it contain sugar?
None added. The pod itself is naturally high in sugars — published analyses of Prosopis mesocarp put it in the 31–50% range — which is why it tastes sweet with nothing in it.
